FILMMAKER INTERVIEW

WHAT DO YOU WANT THE AUDIENCE TO TAKE AWAY FROM THIS FILM?

The importance of acknowledging our mental health challenges, and finding ways to talk openly and honestly about our experiences.

WHAT SCENE DID YOU HAVE AN ABSOLUTE BLAST FILMING AND WHY?

The initial sound check videos with my “talent”, Justis. He was NOT cooperating which made for several great Blooper Reels! Somehow even with the heavy topic, we enjoyed moments of humor while filming.

WHY ARE OPPORTUNITIES LIKE FILM PRIZE JUNIOR IMPORTANT TO STUDENTS LIKE YOU?

As a marginalized Black Girl raised in New Mexico, my contributions, voice, and presence are often quickly overlooked or omitted altogether. Even as an Elite Athlete, I still find myself being misunderstood and required to advocate for my right to be acknowledged for ALL the strengths and talents I possess. Creating films that hold space and shine a light on complex subject matters like racial equity, gender equality, and mental health, provides an accessible, creative medium for advocacy and education.

HIGH SCHOOL DOCUMENTARY: SEE JUSTIS.

THE FILMMAKING PROCESS

The biggest Film Prize Junior New Mexico surprise for me was how much I learned about the process of making films.

FPJRNM coached filmmakers through all 5 stages of film production: development, pre-production, production, post-production and distribution.

As we prepared for distribution, FPJRNM Filmmakers were required to produce an official Movie Poster and Press Kit.

I worked on Sister Of The Circle from October 2022 to March 2023; I was literally working up to [and slightly beyond] the submission deadline.

BEST DOCUMENTARY (HIGH SCHOOL) WINNER: SISTER OF THE CIRCLE

Yes it was a LOT of work (especially with school and my track season) but I enjoyed the experience.

I am a filmmaker and can’t wait to participate in FPJRNM 2024.
